The Moapa Valley High School men's basketball team took second place in the 2007 MVHS Holiday Classic Tournament held December 27-29. The Pirates won strong victories against West Wendover and 4A Del Sol High School, but came up short in the final championship game against Silverado.
The Pirates played West Wendover in the first round of the tournament and found out quickly why the Wolverines are one of the best 2A teams in the state. The Pirates found themselves down early. It seemed to take Moapa Valley a long time to find a groove while West Wendover turned up the heat. The Pirates would trail at the end of the first quarter 8-17.
The Pirates fared better in the second quarter as Shiloh Sandoval made an easy layup to put the Pirates within seven with a score of 10-17. But West Wendover kept charging as their offensive attack was led by star guard Jared Lewis. When Lewis had to leave the game because of a leg injury, the Pirates took advantage and began to chip back into the lead. When Shaun Hilton made a basket toward the end of the quarter, it put the Pirates back within a manageable score as the half ended. Score at the end of the first half: Moapa Valley 18, West Wendover 28.
Moapa Valley came out hot in the third quarter and Brad Weiss got the fire burning on a three pointer to put the score back up to 21-28. Maletich would make a layup to get Moapa to within five. When Max Jenkins hit a jumper from the open floor with 6:04 left in the quarter, the Pirates took a 29-28 lead.
From that point on, the Pirates physically manhandled the Wolverines as they pounded the glass and drew fouls. When Shiloh Sandoval made an easy layup with 1:40 left, the Pirates took their first double digit lead with a score of 44-34. Bobby Vallet would finish up the scoring on a last second jump shot to give Moapa Valley a 46-34 lead.
The Pirate physicality was exemplified by Zach Frehner early in the fourth quarter as Frehner blocked a shot, recovered the ball, and sprinted down the court for a fast break layup to give Moapa a 48-34 lead. The Pirate scoring slowed down as Moapa focused more defensively but when Shaun Hilton made a jump shot with 3:21 left, it all but sealed it for the Pirates. Final Score: Moapa Valley 59, West Wendover 44.
The following night, the Pirates played Del Sol, a Las Vegas 4A school, in the semifinal game of the tournament.
The Pirates opened up well. Max Jenkins was the first to put points on the board for the Pirates to create a 2-2 tie. Brad Weiss opened up the game to give Moapa their first lead with a layup with 7:00 remaining in the first quarter.
The Pirates continued to use their physical game and when Weiss again made it into the paint for an easy layup, the Pirates led 8-7 with 2:00 remaining in the quarter. The Pirates would take a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Moapa Valley continued to dominate the paint and when Steve Jensen made yet another Pirate layup, the Pirates took a 16-10 lead.
Del Sol played an efficient style of basketball that allowed them to move their players into the scoring position by using their height and weight advantage. When Shiloh Sandoval hit an open shot from the floor however, Moapa Valley took a 23-15 lead with 4:30 remaining in the half.
The third quarter was full of sparks, intensity, and full-fledged physical aggression. The defensive struggle of both teams led to an extremely physical style of play that became down right violent at times. After Brad Weiss made another Pirates layup things got ugly. This caused the referees to step in and control the situation. Several players on both sides got called for flagrant and technical fouls which caused the Gary Batchelor Gymnasium to erupt with anger and frustration. This pushed both teams into the double bonus and caused every foul to be followed with shots. Nevertheless, Moapa Valley would hold a 46-38 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
The Pirates continued to get uncontested layups inside the paint. When Brad Weiss hit one of these shots early in the fourth quarter to give Moapa a 54-41 lead, it appeared that the Pirates would cruise to victory. Later, Shiloh Sandoval hit a jumper that secured a good margin for the Pirates. Dustin Maletich finished the scoring off to allow Moapa Valley the chance to advance to the championship game. Final Score: Moapa Valley 65, Del Sol 55.
The Pirates played the Silverado Skyhawks, a dominant 4A program in Las Vegas, in Saturday's championship game. The Pirates went on a offensive famine early on while Silverado had a bountiful feast of scoring. The Skyhawks scored 20 unanswered points as they used play from their forward and star guard to produce solid gold on the scoreboard. By the end of the first quarter Silverado held a 5-26 lead.
In the second quarter, Silverado outmanned the Pirates. Moapa Valley fought to keep the game in a manageable range in case of a miracle but when Silverado hit a shot to make it 10-30 with 2:59 left in the quarter, the margin was slipping out of control from the Pirates. Score at the end of the first half: Moapa Valley 17, Silverado 37.
Moapa Valley continued to take a pummelling in the second half from a dominant Skyhawk team. Even when Brad Weiss made an uncontested layup with 7:00 to go in the third quarter, the Pirates still found themselves down 19-41.
The Pirates played on even terms with Silverado from that point on. But it turned out that they were too far in the hole to crawl out. The Skyhawks would hold on for the win. Final Score: Moapa Valley 51, Silverado 66.
After the game, Head Coach Mike Strong offered comments on the tourney. "We had a really good tournament. We showed that we're capable of playing at a high level but we need to be more consistent. We just need to keep improving," commented Strong.
