Moapa Valley Progress
After a good and rigorous pre-season campaign, the Moapa Valley High School Pirate basketball team took the court at the Meadows School in Las Vegas last Friday reflecting on the journey to that point.
The preseason play started rough for the Pirates as they lost their first two games. They finally got a close win in Enterprise. From there, the Pirates traveled to Southern California where they played several close games but lost them all.
When the Pirates returned home from that trip, however, it was easy they seemed to find the spark that was needed to lift them onward. Since returning, Moapa Valley has won five of their six games and is still charging forward.
The Pirates played their final pre-season matchup against a Meadows team that is currently the defending 2A state champs. The Pirates and the Mustangs played a close first quarter as both teams
played well offensively to have a 16-16 tie at the end of the first quarter.
Moapa Valley put up 12 points in the second quarter and were down by one point after the first half ended. Score at the end of the first half: Moapa Valley 28, The Meadows 29.
The Pirates errupted offensively and defensively in the third quarter as Moapa Valley used their physical style of run-and-gun basketball that led them to have the chance for many uncontested layups. When all was said and done, the Pirates scored 30 points in the third quarter while holding Meadows to only twelve. Score at the end of the third quarter: Moapa Valley 58, The Meadows 41.
The Pirate offensive effort continued in the fourth quarter as Moapa Valley continued to use their bodies to get to the basket and draw fouls. As time went on, Meadows was just unable to catch up to the
Pirates as they continued their offensive bonanza. Final Score: Moapa Valley 83, The Meadows 63.
The Pirates were led offensively by Shiloh Sandoval who scored sixteen points. Sandoval, Dustin Maletich, Bobby Vallet, Max Jenkins, and Steven Jensen all scored in double digits.
After the game, Coach Mike Strong commented on the team's progression throughout the pre-season. "We've had a good pre-season. We're obviously alot more consistent offensively and we'll see where this progress takes us," said Strong.
