Public Hearings to Discuss Federal Detention Facility
Moapa Valley Progress

A letter accompanying a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was sent last week from the Louis Berger Group in Washington, D.C. on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of the Federal Detention Trustee (OFDT). The draft EIS concerned a proposal to award a contract for a detention facility to service Southern Nevada.

The two sites mentioned in the draft EIS are Nye County and Clark County Nevada. The draft EIS was provided to fulfill the requirements of the national Environmental Policy Act. The draft EIS considers the potential impacts of the proposed project upon both natural and man made environments. Among the many topics that the EIS will address are such issues as land use, socio-economics, air quality, noise, transportation, utility services, cultural, aesthetic, hydrological, and biological resources to name only a few.

From December 21, 2007 to February 4, 2008 the EIS will be subject to a 45-day review period. Copies of the draft EIS are available for public viewing at the Moapa Town Library. They are also available to be seen at Public Libraries in Las Vegas and at the Pahrump Community Library. On Wednesday, January 16 at 7:00 pm in the Marley Robinson Community Center in Moapa the OFDT will hold a public hearing to allow the public to offer comments on the proposed EIS. During the 45-day review period the public, not able to attend the public hearing can send comments regarding the draft EIS to:
