The objective of the event was for organizers to assign a scientific development and for the middle school students to use their imaginations in developing a city that could use that technological development.
All of the cities were futuristic cities. Some were under the water. Others were levitating above the Planet Mars. The four team’s city names were Delphina, Shell City, Magnetica, and Loganton.
The team that developed the City Delphina imagined a city in the year 2610, located under water near the Great Barrier Reef. Delphina finished third overall in the competition. The Delphina team also received the “Best Essay” award. Each team had to develop a written brochure to attract people to their city. Teams also had to write an essay about their cities and build a scale model of a section of the town. Members of the Delphina team included Danielle Pray, Bryanna Sheldon, and Skyler Simmons.
The contest’s “Best Education” award went to Shell City. Shell City exists in the year 2475, and is a clear domed city under water near the Bahamas. Members of the Shell City team were Devan Cherneski, Dallin Watkins, and Shaine Williams.
Magnetica City in the year 2291 is a city floating above the Planet Mars. Magnetica team members John Rockenbach, Dallin Lytle, and Tyler Reynolds won two awards at the competition receiving both “Best Model” and “Most Creative Moving Part.” The moving part was a working elevator that moved minerals from the surface of Mars to the floating city.
The final City was the City of Loganton, in the year 2353. Loganton levitates above Antarctica. The Loganton team was made up of Nathan Beckstrand, Colton Millington, and Daniela Carbajal. Loganton received the “Most Innovatively Engineered City” award.
The competition is organized by National Engineers Week organization. The purpose of the competition is to encourage middle school students to pursue studies as engineers. Lyon Middle School came away with the most awards out of the twelve schools participating in the competition.
