Pirates Soundly Defeat Pahrump
Jonathan Oglesby
Moapa Valley Progress

Champions are made in the postseason; a phrase that has been proven time and time again. It doesn’t matter what you do in the regular season but, rather, that you make it to the postseason because that is where champions are minted and judged.

Well, the Moapa Valley High School Basketball Pirates are on their way to the playoffs as the second seed in this year’s 2008 NIAA Southern 3A Division Playoffs.

The Pirates’ 4-4 division record was finished off after their final win of the season against Pahrump Valley.

The Pirates dueled against Pahrump Valley on Friday, February 8, in a crucial game which decided the outcome and pairings of the playoffs. After Pahrump Valley’s overtime win over the Pirates at the Gary Batchelor Gymnasium, the Pirates were eager to get the win over the Trojans on their home court and head into the playoffs with confidence.

The Pirates outdueled the Trojans in a close first half to take a 13-12 lead into the second quarter. Moapa Valley kicked it into overdrive in the second quarter as Shaun Hilton led the Pirates. He would score several of his 27 points for the evening to put Moapa Valley into a 32-22 lead going into the third quarter.

Moapa Valley would get better competition in the third quarter as the Trojans attempted to even the score. Pahrump scored 19 points in the third quarter. Unfortunately for the Trojans, Moapa Valley also scored 19 points in the third quarter to take a 51-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Pirates would dominate the fourth quarter as Moapa outscored the Trojans 16-8 to take a controlling win back to Moapa Valley as the playoff berths were decided and the Pirates would have a high seed. Final Score: Moapa Valley 67, Pahrump Valley 49.

The Pirates were impressive in their win as Moapa Valley went 21-32 for free throws. Moapa Valley was led by Hilton’s 27 points, Max Jenkins’ 10 points, and Brad Weiss’ 8 in their runaway victory.

And know the playoff pairings are set as Faith Lutheran will play Virgin Valley and the Pirates will play Pahrump Valley again in the opening round of the Southern 3A Division Tournament. The Pirates will play the Trojans at 4:40 p.m. at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas. If Moapa Valley can win, the Pirates will play the winner of the Faith-Virgin game for the Southern 3A Division Championship and the right to go to the 2008 NIAA Nevada Class 3A Boys Basketball Tournament.
