This weekly column will explore the makings of the Clark County Fair as it comes into being over the next two months. It will highlight the Volunteers, the Fair Grounds, the Entertainment, the Exhibitors, the Directors, the Carnival, the Vendors and more.
I had stopped by Mary Perkins’ house to wish her a Happy 88th Birthday (“How old ARE you, Mary” says I. She replied with a twinkle in her eye, “I’m 16.” “WOW! But I see your point . . . 8 and 8 are 16.” Once again, Mary replied, “I feel 16!”)
What greeted me when I entered her charming home was the sight of some of the most beautiful crotchet tablecloth and bed covers I have ever seen. Her house is filled with wonderful Afghans and toys and current projects.
Although Mary dabbled in art and ceramics early on, it was when she retired and sold her Beauty Salon and School in Ogden, Utah, ended her volunteer hair care at the County Hospital in Roy, Utah, traveled extensively and moved to the Moapa Valley in the late 1990s, that she began to concentrate on the art of crotchet. She crotchets every evening for 2 to 3 hours while watching TV. She explained that the big items as the tablecloths and bed spreads take two years to complete.
Mary donates many of her smaller projects to the Senior Center Craft Sale (to be held this year on March 8). She is actively involved in the Senior Center where she instructs Yoga two days a week (Mon and Fri from 9 to 10 a.m. This class is open to all community citizens.) She has also been one of the driving forces behind building a new Senior Center (ground-breaking is currently slated for February 21.)
She credits Yoga with keeping her healthy and vital and crotchet with giving her a creative outlet.
Mary looks forward to the Clark County Fair where she has, for many years, taken the opportunity to share the beauty of her work with others. The 1997 Vern Waite Memorial Award, the Vern Waite Award of 2007, numerous Best of Class, Best of Show and Grand Champion Awards are just a few received by this Clark County Fair Exhibitor.
Exhibits for the April 10-13, 2008, Clark County Fair are welcomed from residents of Clark County and surrounding area (to include St. George, Pahrump, Mesquite, Lincoln County) and from our “Snow Birds.”
The Exhibitor Handbooks will be available in the near future. Those interested can also obtain the data at www.ccfair.com. If more exhibitor information is desired, please contact Margaret Houston at 398-3776.
