Moapa Valley Progress
After a season that defied the experts’ predictions, the experts finally picked one game right and it brought the end to the season for the Lady Pirates of Moapa Valley High School.
The Lady Pirates played league champion Pahrump Valley in the opening round of the Southern 3A playoffs and the early results were very promising. Two minutes into the game, the Lady Pirates held a 3-2 lead off of Kasi Delgadillo baskets and at this moment, it seemed as if the Lady Pirates would hang tough throughout the game.
Unfortunately for Moapa, the wheels came off soon as the Lady Trojans of Pahrump ran onward on a 11-0 run to end the quarter with a 13-3 lead.
The Lady Pirates got an early free-throw to start chopping away at the lead but Pahrump went on another 7-0 run to expand the lead to 20-4. Cori Cook made a three to cut back into the Lady Trojan lead. But the rest of the second quarter was a defensive struggle as the Lady Pirates trailed Pahrump 26-9 at the half.
The third quarter opened just as rough for the Lady Pirates as Pahrump Valley used their physical post players to manhandle their way inside to another 14-0 run until Cydney Soloman made a three with 2:15 left in the quarter. The third quarter would end with Blythe Thompson sinking a three to give the Lady Trojans a 43-16 lead.
The fourth quarter would prove to be the only plentiful quarter for the Lady Pirates as Moapa Valley used their style of play to finally begin to erode at the Pahrump defense. The Lady Pirates would eventually score 21 points in the fourth quarter which was ended by Brianne Olige’s offensive putback as the seconds ran off of the clock. Final Score: Pahrump Valley 50, Moapa Valley 37.
In all, the Lady Pirates went 2-6 in division play, beating Boulder City both times. Congratulation to Coach Jordan Adams, her staff, and the players.
