Music Students Perform In Solo Festival
Moapa Valley Progress

Moapa Valley High School Music Department held a Solo and Ensemble Competition on Saturday, February 9. Under the guidance of Mrs. Kim Delgadillo and Mrs. Kaelyne Pendleton, the students of MVHS took home several Superior ratings.

In the High School competition, it is similar to a sports competition. The students first compete in solo ensemble, and then the best of this competition goes on to the divisional

competition. The winners of this go to All-State competition in Reno. The winners of that will perform at the concert in Reno.

This year the following MVHS musicians will be going to divisions: violinist Shelby Simper, pianist Hannah Summers, and cellist, Grant Pray.

The new Chamber Orchestra group that was formed this school year also received a Superior rating. Members of the group are: violinists: Summer Simmons, Shelby Simper, Shelby Bennett, Michaela Coburn and Morgan Soderquist; violists: Megan Soderquist, Grace Turner and Erin Hills; cellists: Hanna Luce, Grant Pray; and Bass player: Bryce Mortensen.

Up until the Chamber Group performed, the judge had only awarded three Superior rankings for this division. When they got the news that they had received the covetted designation, the group screamed with enthusiasm.

“I am so proud of them and the way they played and how they represented our Valley in a great way,” said the group’s director, Kim Delgadillo.

All of these kids are so excited to be going to divisions and they should be. They have worked very hard and long and it paid off. Now they are practicing more and working harder because they want to go to State.

Other MVHS musicians that competed include: trumpet player, Michael Langhardt, who received an Excellent rating; violinist Jessany Mortensen and violist Erin Hills, both of whom received a Good Plus designation.
