Moapa Valley Progress

Clark County Commissioners Bruce Woodbury, Tom Collins and Chip Maxfield will visit Moapa Valley on Thursday, February 21 to meet with residents and participate in a groundbreaking for the new Jim Boyles Senior Center in Overton.

Construction on the new 10,000-square-food facility is expected to take approximately 12 months. The community’s existing senior

center at 475 S. Moapa Valley Blvd. in Overton will relocate to the new facility at Cooper Street and Moapa Valley Blvd when construction is complete.

United Seniors Inc., which now operates the existing senior center, will continue to coordinate programs and activities at the new facility. Amenities at the new center will include a computer room, game room, classes for pottery and ceramics, and various recreation activities, including yoga. “The existing senior center has served the community well, but the new facility will be a welcomed addition for seniors to enjoy a broader range of services and activities,” said Commissioner Woodbury, whose district includes the area near the Community Center.

Commissioner Collins, who also represents portions of Overton, as well as Moapa and Logandale, is attending the groundbreaking as well. “We plan to add more amenities to the center in the future, including a therapy pool and doctor’s office for visiting physicians,” Collins said, then adding with a smile, “and a hitching rail for an old horse.”

Commissioners Collins and Woodbury will also stop by the Overton Senior Fair, which will be held from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The event is sponsored by the Clark County Senior Advocate Program and residents are invited to receive free health screenings, including tests for blood pressure, bone density, diabetes, and eye exams.

“The Senior Fair is a very popular event for seniors throughout Moapa Valley,” Collins said. “It’s a great venue for getting information about services available for seniors.”

Representatives from several agencies will be on hand to offer information about their services, including AARP Nevada, Nevada Legal Services, Clark County Public Guardian, Office of the Governor/Consumer Health Assistance, Social Security Administration, and the Lions Sight First Foundation of Nevada.

Staff from the Clark County Assessor’s Office will also be in attendance to answer questions and take application for Senior Citizen’s Tax/Rent Assistance Program. Seniors who meet age, income and residency requirements may be eligible to receive a rebate on their rent or tax bills. The program is accepting application through April 30.

“I enjoy working with Commissioner Collins and county staff on bringing the senior fair to Moapa Valley,” Woodbury said. “It’s important to provide seniors in our rural communities with access to the many services Clark County and other agencies and organizations offer.”
