The cheerleaders competed in three areas of competition: a show cheer, a pom routine and stunt competition. They entered the co-ed competition, because they now have two male cheerleaders, who help them do stunts and gymnastics.
The team took first in their pom routine, coming out ahead of 11 other schools, and scored high in the cheer and stunt categories. “We had to earn a lot of points in each category,” said Coach Denise Robison. “This was the first year that an all-around state championship was awarded, so it took a lot of effort in each area.”
When the scores were tallied, the MVHS Cheerleaders won the 3A State Championship. “It was really awesome, and quite an achievement!” said Robison. “After supporting the other school teams all year, it was really great for the cheer squad to go out and win a State Championship of its own.”
The cheerleaders themselves, were excited and satisfied that their performance was their best. Said senior cheerleader Jennifer Jack, “I feel wonderful! We worked really hard and we did great. Everyone did their best and we were awesome!”
The team also won the All-State academic award for having the best overall grades in the 3A cheer squad division.
The dancers also did “wonderful,” according to their coach, Lana Hardy. The team competed in two dance categories, hip-hop dancing and jazz dancing. This was the team’s first time ever competing with a hip-hop dance and they earned second place for their outstanding performance.
The team came out second in the state, behind a private, recruiting school, Faith Lutheran. “We did wonderful, we beat 10 other teams, and we came right behind Faith Lutheran. In my eyes the girls were champions,” said Hardy. “I’m really proud of them, they danced their hearts out, came together as a team and they were just amazing.”
“We’re a little disappointed that we weren’t able to bring home a State Title,” said senior dancer Michaela Coburn. “But we danced our best performance ever, and there is no way we could be disappointed in our performance. I’m so proud of our team.”
Team captain Betty Sendlein agreed. “I’m proud of our team,” she said. “Our placing was pretty amazing, and every girl really gave their all in this competition.”
