It was not a quiet day at the library early Saturday morning on February 23. The sound of a dog barking and cat meowing could be heard through the entire library.
In honor of February being National Pet Month, the Moapa Valley Library held a Pet Story Hour for the kids. The teachers, Melody Buchanan and Christina Earon, thought it would be a great idea to bring animals and allow

the kids to learn about them. Buchanan brought her cat, Nala, and her dog, Mariah, from home for the kids to play with.
Bevan Dalley was at his home in the afternoon doing some carpentry work. In the process of cutting lumber, to be used as a baseboard, Dalley caught his pinky, ring, and middle finger of his left hand severing the fingers below the base. Dalley was able to remove his hand but not until the saw had severely torn into his index finger.
As the children showed up they were a little unsure of the animals at first, but as soon as story hour began, the kids loved them. The kids learned about cats and dogs, as well as how to take care of them. They got to play with the animals by playing fetch and with other toys. Each child fed treats to both Nala and Mariah then sat down with the animals as Buchanan and Earon read pet books.
Later, the kids enjoyed making masks of dogs and cats. They then decided with the extra few minutes they had before their parents came to pick them up, they would make cat toys. The children had a great time at story hour and can’t wait for next week.
“The animals made the Story Hour so much fun,” said Earon. “The animals were so friendly and absolutely loved the children.”
Buchanan and Earon said that they would love to do another pet day soon. “It was a great idea to bring animals to Story Hour.,” Buchanan said. “It was something different from what we have done before. The children had a great time and loved being around the animals.”
All children ages 4-9 are welcome to Story Hour on Saturday mornings at the Overton library.
