Moapa Valley High School speakers brought home the green and gold from the Virgin Valley High School’s first-in-a-long-time-if-ever speech and debate tournament held in Mesquite on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8. Moapa Valley out-pointed ten other teams to win the event.
The team won the championship on overall team strength as fifteen of twenty-four Pirates advanced to final rounds in at least one event. Palo Verde High School finished second, Virgin Valley third, Green Valley fourth, and Spring Valley fifth.
Katie Allum scored big for the Pirates as she won expository speaking, placed second in oratory speaking and third in policy debate with her debate partner Josh Chandler, who also placed second in humorous interpretation of literature.
Other multiple event placers added to the Pirate totals. Kylea McMurray placed second in oratory and fifth in extemporaneous speaking. Steven Abbot placed fourth in humorous duo with his partner Sarah Burke, placed fifth in congress, and earned the top chair gavel for his leadership in the house chamber. Calvin McMurray placed second in Lincoln Douglas debate and fourth in expository speaking.
Jonathan Oglesby added some big points to the total by winning the extemporaneous speaking event. Jessica Cameron placed second in dramatic interpretation of literature while Cody Adams finished second in expository speaking. The duo interpretation team of Jesse Madril and Nick Brough won third place. Wendy Cook placed fourth in oratory speaking, Abigail Woodard finished sixth in congress, and the junior varsity team of Jessica Shelley and Brandon Welcher placed third in public forum.
Pirate coach Harold Tusler praised Virgin Valley coach Michelle Uttke and her team for hosting a successful tournament. “Hosting a forensics tournament is no small task,” he said. “The Virgin Valley team worked hard to ensure this tournament went off without a hitch.”
As for his own team, Tusler was somewhat reserved in his compliments. “The Vegas teams were not at full strength for this tournament, which left the door open for us,” he said. “We certainly took advantage of the situation there, but if we are going to be successful at the state tournament, we still have some work to do.”
The state tournament for all classifications is held in Reno during the last weekend in March. The Pirates will compete against all schools in the state to see if they can add a third state championship in the AAA, AA, and A division to the two earned in the last two years.
