Mesquite, NV - Billions of dollars and countless hours are spent every year by people in an attempt to stay young. Last month two celebrities in Mesquite, at Mesa View Regional Hospital, happened on to the aging secret that is a sure to keep them young for many, many years to come.

Patrick Anderson and Gavynn Bernal were born on Friday February 29, and with a birthday only once every four years they will both have seen only 25 birthdays by February 29, 2108.

Patrick, the son of Tony and Misty Anderson was born at 2:04 a.m. and Gavynn the son of Luis Bernal and Courtney Buchanan arrived at 8:38 p.m. The proud parents were thrilled with the new additions to their families and intrigued by the unique situation of a Leap Day birthday.

February 29, Leap Day, is added to the calendar every four years as a corrective measure, because the earth does not orbit around the sun in precisely 365 days. The exact figure is 365.2425 days, which means that we gain an extra day every four years.

Gavynn Buchanan, Leap Day Baby born at Mesa View Regional Hospital in Mesquite, being held by father, Luis Bernal. During the reign of Emperor Julius Caesar, when there were only 355 days in a year, the seasons would get out of sync with the calendar. Caesar decreed that the calendar be revised, a new month be added in his name (July), and an extra day added every four years to keep the calendar and seasons together. The date of February 29 was chosen because the 28th was then considered the last day of the year.

Obviously Patrick and Gavynn share this aging secret with many people. There are approximately 200,000 people in the United States with Leap Day birthdays. Probably the most famous Leap Day baby is Superman! In 1988, TIME magazine proclaimed Superman to be born on Feb. 29.

Having a Leap Day birthday can be problematic at times because in our automated world there are some systems,
particularly online, that do not recognize February 29 as a valid birth date. And, Patrick and Gavynn here’s a bit of advice – when you are 12 years old, don’t even think about excusing any misbehavior on the fact that you are technically only 3.
