The Moapa Valley High School (MVHS) Swim Team has begun their season with a splash this year. This new school team includes 24 swimmers coached by Tracy Riggins and Erin Thompson.
The young team competed in their first meet this weekend, and they finished strong. The boys won their dual meet against Canyon Springs, and the girls lost a close meet. “If we had more girl swimmers, the girls could have won as well,” said Tracy Riggins, head swim coach.
This is the team’s second year. Last year many interested swimmers and one willing coach put together a team that dominated the Sunset Division. “We were not supposed to be in the Sunset Division,” said Riggins, “but I think that they wanted us to be in a league with other less experienced teams.”
This year the team will compete in the league that they are “supposed to be in,”the Sunrise Division. This division may provide more competition.
Unfortunately, several of the most experienced swimmers on the team last year graduated, or chose not to participate this year.
“This year most of our swimmers are freshmen and sophomores, and most of them are inexperienced,” said Riggins. “This will be a building year, while we pull things together, but we have a lot of potential.”
