The Moapa Valley High School Boys Track Team is getting back to its luster after a few seasons of less than admirable results. The Track program this year, which is led by former MVHS track great Shane Hickman, is starting to find its form after a hard pre-season of training and workouts. In order to get back to that State Championship form, Hickman,

who won a State Championship in his senior year, has hired several assistant coaches with
longtime experience including respected former head coach Jeff Keel.
The Track team’s most notable success this year was found last weekend in Las Vegas as the Pirates ran their way into a first place finish at the Heitkotter Memorial at Faith Lutheran. Moapa Valley came out on top of a field that was made up of all five Southern 3A teams and several other respected programs from the 1A and 2A classifications.
Overall, the Pirates finished with a 108.5 point total finish with Pahrump Valley finishing with 104, Boulder City scoring 102, Virgin Valley taking 82, and Faith Lutheran scoring 75.5 points.
The Pirates were led by medalist Shiloh Sandoval in the 800 meter event, Conley Masters in the 110 and 300 Hurdles, and the seasoned relay teams in the 400 and 800 relay. Jax Howard was able to win the Shot Put event and come away with a second place in the Discus.
Pirate Track will now continue their season in working toward their goal of getting back to State Championship form. One of the highlights of that road will be the Richard Lewis Invitational at Moapa Valley which features some of the best track teams in and around the Silver State. The event is scheduled for April 4 at Pirate Stadium.
Moapa Valley High School will also host the Southern 3A Divisional Track Meet on May 9-10.
