Perkins Elementary students participated in Reading Week back in February. But on Friday, March 14 they were rewarded with a chance to dunk Principal Ken Paul and Librarian Mike Jack in a tank of cool water.

During their Reading Week, theme “Ride the Reading Train” kids had a different daily theme. Monday was ‘Read Each

Other Day’ in which kids wore shirts with writing on them and let their friends read them.

Tuesday was ‘Good Impressions Day’. Kids were to come to school in the best clothes and hair looking nice. Wednesday was ‘Little Buddy Day’. The kids were allowed to bring a stuffed animal to school to read with them.

Thursday was ‘Our Future’s So Bright Day’. Kids wore hats and sunglasses to school. On Friday it was ‘Perkins Patriots Day’ where the kids will wear their new spirit shirts. Also on Friday the kids had a reading picnic with special guests (parents and grandparents). Every day there was bingo for prizes and DEAR time, Drop Everything And Read. Kids carried books with them all day and would read for a predetermined time when DEAR time was called over the loud speaker.

The kids had a goal to earn 700 Accelerated Reader points during the week. With approximately 130 kids, they earned well over 900 points.

The prize for reaching their goal was to have the opportunity to dunk Principal Ken Paul and Librarian Mike Jack in a dunk tank. The top ten point-earners were privileged with the first shots. Thanks to Moapa resident, Gary Watkins, a great dunk tank was provided for the fun. The weather was a bit windy and temperatures were in the low 70’s but Paul and Jack were ready for the dunking to begin. Students and teachers gathered and Jack was first up in the tank.

The top ten point earners included Madison Soderquist, 37 points; Bruno Reyes, 36.5 points; Kelson Leavitt, 24.5 points; Alexus Leavitt, 22.7; Jordan Morwood, 22.4 points; Nisani Avilez, 22.0 points; Kirby May, 21.4 points; Sidnee Anderson, 16.7 points; Anna Stratton, 16.3 points; and a tie for Shiley Blackwell and Marshall Potts with 16.0 points.

None of these ten were able to sink Jack. So just to make sure the button worked, a brave teacher pushed the button and sank him down. According to Jack the water wasn’t so bad, the tank had been filled earlier in the day and the water had time to warm.

Paul then took the seat in the dunk tank and names were drawn for more shots at the button. Kyra Postma and Keely Watkins gave it a shot with no luck and then Jacob Reahm was up and like a pro hit the button. Only the button did not send Paul into the water, so Reahm got to push the button himself.
