The Big Read At The Library
By Catherine Ellerton

Submitted Apr. 2, 2008

“Betty! Betty! Open up the door!” I screamed as I knocked and knocked and knocked.

“What?” said she bleary eyed. “It is 6:00 in the morning for heaven’s sake.”

“Well,” replied I, “it is April 1 and The Big Read has begun!”

“What?”

“Remember – at the Clark Country libraries – it’s Adult Reading Month.”

Now, perhaps I should digress. April is “Reading Las Vegas” month. There are two categories – Adults (18 and up) and the Teens – Big Read. While the supply lasts, those who sign up to take part will get a free Library Tote Bag. With every book you read, or audio book you listen to, you get to put a coupon in the drawing. For the adults, the weekly prizes are “The Great Gatsby” book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a treat pack and gift certificate, a Starbucks Coffee pack and a Border’s Gift Pack. Then there is the grand prize of Southwest Airline Tickets to just about anywhere. The weekly prizes are different per each library. The Grand Prize is for all library entries. The Teens – Big Read – also has prizes, just different.

Snow birds, or anyone, you don’t have to read the whole month if you can’t find the time. Just sign up at your local library any time during April and every book you read or audio book you listen to you get an extra chance to win the weekly prizes and a chance for the Grand Prize.

So, will it be “The Last Cowgirl” by Jana Richman or “Fast Track” one of Fern Michaels’ Sisterhood books or the audio book of Clive Cussler’s “Polar Shift.” Bridget, John, Laura, Esti – see you at the Moapa Valley Library!
