I wonder if one can be a groupie of an a cappella group? Of a group that plays and sings music from the 16th-20th centuries. Well, I am proud to say, that I am a Zephyr Consort and Singers Groupie.

It has been a joy to follow them and their exploits since 2004. The group presented a

Spring Concert at the Old Logandale School on Saturday evening, March 29. The five instrumentalists in the consort are Gaye Nelson, Mary Lou Whitney, Floice Lund and Heather Lyon. The instrument of choice is the recorder – from the Bass to the Sopranino.

I could throw all kinds of musical terms at you describing their performance – intertwining counter melodies, purity of tone and sound, blending of tone, and the clarity of the notes as they twine and swirl about each other. I could say the pieces selected represented the many facets of music of those centuries. I could say the canons were delightful.

(According to Webster, a canon is a “strict form of contrapuntal writing in which the subject or antecedent announced by one voice, is exactly imitated by the answer or consequent in the same or harmonizing key.”) But then, I would have to look up contrapuntal and, besides, why muddy the water?

This group of 5 instrumentalists plus the Zephyr Singers: Kira Beckstrand, Jill Greig, Wendy Jensen, Kara Lewis, Gaye Nelson, Tammy Rollins, Vicki Willard, Scott Beckstrand, Joey Bischoff, Mary Lou Whitney, Roy Bischoff and Bruce Lund are under the talented direction of Floice Lund. The concert explored the many answers to the question, “What makes the world go around?” According to the composers chosen to be represented at the evening’s concert, it is love, joy, faith, hope, music, dancing, gossip and play.

The Zephyr Consort and Singers is a group of talented musicians, who leave their egos at the door, and come together to blend their sound as one.
