By Rachel Brandes

Mutton Bustin’ at the Clark County Fair & Rodeo has quickly become a favorite attraction for both young and old. Back for the second year, Mutton Bustin’ is a popular event seen at many fairs around the United States. This sport is similar to bull riding; only for kids. Contestants must weigh less than 60 lbs to participate. These brave kids attempt to last six seconds on the back of a sheep. Sheep are said to be as

unpredictable as a bull is for a bull rider.

Sheep are released from a chute, the same as in a bull riding competition. Kids hold on the best they can as the sheep runs around the arena. Some kids even rode the sheep backwards in an effort to hold on better.

This year something new at Mutton Bustin’ was the ‘Clown’ Gary Pratt. Pratt was there like a rodeo clown to help the kids and keep the crowd pumped.

The Mutton Bustin’ competitions were held each day of the Fair. A qualifying round narrowed the group down to four finalists who then competed in a Championship Round later in the evening.

Sunday’s Mutton Bustin Champion Krista Phillips shows off her Montana Silversmith Mutton Bustin Belt Buckle that was presented by awards sponsor Lin’s Marketplace Manager Darin Leach. Each participant received a cash payout and a t-shirt. All money collected in entry fees was paid out to the kids in some way. For those who placed in the final four a larger cash payout was awarded and for the first place winner of each night a Montana Silversmith Mutton Bustin’ Belt Buckle.

Grand prize winners from each night included Thursday, 7 year old Nathan Waite of Logandale; Friday, 7 year old Coby Longman of Logandale; Saturday, 7 year old Kody Presser of Las Vegas; and 7 year old Krista Phillips of Overton.

Junior Rodeo Director Stuart Riggins explained that this event would not be possible without the fabulous sponsors. Thanks to the Southern Nevada Health District, the Southern Nevada Water Authority, Lin’s Marketplace (awards sponsor), and the United States Army for making this event possible.
