The Lady Pirate Softball team has been working hard through a tough season. The team played against rivals the Virgin Valley Bulldogs in a tough league double header on Tuesday, april 8 and they came out just short of a win.

The first game was close. The Pirates battled hard through the first few innings, and Cori Cook, Cynthia Taylor and Shelby Thompson were each able to get on a base in the first game. The Pirates also did a little stealing during the second inning, which shook the Bulldogs up. After a nice double steal, Cynthia Taylor was able to score and bring the score to 1-1. However at the top of the third inning the Bulldogs were able to come back with another run, and yet another in the 6th inning.

The Pirates continued to fight hard after the Bulldogs took the lead. Senior pitcher Cori Cook pitched 11 strike-outs in one game and the Pirates were able to score one more run. However, they were unable to catch up to the Bulldogs and the game ended 2-3.

The Pirates were a little discouraged by their narrow loss, and it showed in the second game. They did well in the field, led by sophomore pitcher Kaylee King and junior short stop Sadie Helm. Helm was able to pull out some great double plays and helped the Pirates keep up with the Bulldogs. However, despite the field efforts, the Pirates had a tough game at the plate and they were unable to keep up on the scoreboard. The game ended 2-5 for the Bulldogs.

“We weren’t able to get the bat around,” said Coach Kim Delgadillo. “We need to get it in our heads that we are great hitters, and we’ll see our game start to change. We are working hard, and we are determined to become the hitters that we know we can be.”

The Pirates have had a rough league season this year. “We have kind of a mental block,” said Delgadillo. “I know that these girls can do it, but we’re having a tough time bringing the team together and convincing them that they can do it. We still have a change as the second round of league play rolls around.”

The Pirates will be traveling this week as they play against Boulder City and Faith Lutheran.
