LV Mormon Youth Symphony & Chorus To Perform In Overton
Moapa Valley Progress
Submitted April 16, 2008

The Las Vegas Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus (LVMYS&C) will perform in the Old Overton Gym on Sunday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. Concertgoers are asked only to bring a canned food item to the concert to donate to the local food bank at Cappalappa.

Four Moapa Valley youth play in the group. Megan Potter is in the Chorus, Erin Hills, Violist, Grant Pray, Cellist and Shelby Simper, violinist. The LVMYS&C players get together every Saturday morning and rehearse for two hours. The group has a new Orchestra director, David Skouson. He brings his passion for music and entertaining audiences.

Skousen has conducted a national tour of Broadway musical “Chicago” and has directed the off Broadway hit “Secrets Smart Travelers Should Know”. His credits also include “Children of Eden”, “Merrily We Roll Along”, “The Fantasticks”, “Sweeney Todd” and “West Side Story”.

Skousen received his Bachelors of Music from California State University, Long Beach and his Masters of Music in orchestral conducting from Brigham Young University.

DeNae Handy, the conductor of the chorus, enthralled the audience last year with her humor. She received her degree in Music Education from the University of Utah. She has been a choir director for 20 years in both the community and in church. She has organized choirs, adjudicated festivals and competitions and has taught workshops in Seattle, Washington, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Las Vegas, Nevada.
