The first annual “Rope for Life” was held on Saturday, April 19, to raise funds for the upcoming Relay for Life Event. The “Rope for Life”, held at Max Maserang’s Logandale arena, is a team roping event that was organized by local home care and hospice nurse, Teresa Bowen. Bowen is the school nurse at Moapa Valley High School.

Bowen’s team members included Tom Collins, Max Maserang, Glen Hardy and her husband Nels Bowen. Many cowboys saddled up to show their support for the American Cancer Society.
“The results were unbelievable,” said Bowen. A total of 208 teams competed for prizes and cash.
After the dust settled, $5,300 had been raised for the American Cancer Society. A check will be presented to the Relay for Life Committee at the opening ceremonies on Friday evening .
Taking home the honor of first place were Carisa Cutler and Dusty Pulsipher. They each won saddles donated by County Commissioner Tom Collins and a $500 cash prize each. Second place winners were Frank Pendleton and Ryan Frei who received one ton of hay each provided by Glen Hardy and $400 cash. Third place prizes donated by Mesa View Physical Therapy and Moapa Valley Mortuary included various horse supplies and $300 which was won by Craig Wisner and Larry Kennedy. Fourth place went to Doug Schwartz and Nels Bowen who received ropes from Maverick Trailer Sales and $200 each. Fifth place was Wrangler gift certificates and $100 each was won by Tyler Leavitt and Dusty Pulsipher.
Carisa Cutler ended up with the honor of highest placing girl for the day. In addition to her new saddle she won a pedicure from Shears and a free horse shoeing from Frank Pendleton.
Ropers had the opportunity to participate in a steer roping challenge as well. When a bonus steer was caught in ten seconds or less the ropers received prizes. The prize line included dinner for two at Sugars Home Plate, Gift certificates from The Inside Scoop, CBQ Carpet Cleaning, Shears and Frank Pendleton Horse Shoeing service. Wrangler donated shirts and gift certificates. Tyler Magnus and The Roping Show on RFD TV donated halters and hats. Moapa Valley Federal Credit Union donated money to help cover the cost of leasing steers for the event. The Rotary Club of Moapa Valley was present to cook up hamburgers and hot dogs for the crowd.
The event proved to be very successful and Bowen plans on making it an annual fundraiser. “I wanted to combine my career as a nurse and my passion for the sport of team roping into an event that would benefit our community,” she said. “It resulted in a donation way beyond my imagination!”
Bowen felt that holding a cancer benefit would be a way that she could do her part in the fight against cancer. “I hope that this donation makes a difference, be it in the support for research or to motivate others to get out and support Relay for Life with their own fundraiser.”
