it extends to pieces from virtually every musical period and style such as folk songs, spirituals, and musical theater hits. And the dedicated and commitment of each choir member welds the group into magnificent ensemble of unity and precision.
In February 2005, the American Choral Director’s Association selected BYU Singers to open its largest national convention to date. Out of the 100 choirs selected from throughout the nation, BYU Singers was one of approximately 20 college or university choirs. In November 2006, the choir was one of four featured choirs to perform at the National Collegiate Choral Organization in San Antonio, Texas. BYU Singers’ CD recording of choral music of American composer Eric Whitacre continues to be one of the best-selling choral CDs in the world.
In April-May 2005 the BYU Singers toured the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. Beginning its tour in Washington D.C., the choir performed and held workshops in six states and two Canadian provinces. Throughout their tour the BYU Singers were enthusiastically received by audiences from Harvard University in Massachusetts, to the St. Marc de Rosemont Catholic Church in Montreal.
The BYU Singers’ extensive touring history spans decades and continents. Since its creation in 1984, the choir has toured in more than 20 foreign countries. In 1999, as the choir sang concerts in Israel, Benjamin Bar’am, critic for Ha’aretz, wrote: “This choir is comprised of exemplary, well-integrated musicians with clear, beautiful voices that achieve remarkable tone color as one voice. Delicate dynamic nuance and meticulously shaped phrasing with exacting intonation evidence the intense training and professionalism of this choir.”
In May 2001, BYU Singers traveled to Milan, Italy, and West Africa, where they spent four weeks performing in Ghana, Benin, and Togo. The University Singers were the first touring group from BYU to visit these West African countries. Local leaders, dignitaries, and tribal chiefs praised the BYU Singers’ performances. BYU Singers have also been hosted in Europe, the Middle East, and South Pacific.
At the choir’s June 1999 Carnegie Hall performance, Mr. Christos Pavlides, vice consul for Cyprus, said, “I have never experienced anything like this before. It was absolutely wonderful. At times, the voices sounded like musical instruments.”
The local St. John’s Ballet Folklorico Dancers will be performing at Monday’s concert during a short intermission. Tickets for a handmade queen sized quilt will also be sold at this performance. The Arts Council will have raffle tickets for sale, one for $1 and 12 for $10. Raffle tickets can also be purchased at Decor and More in Overton.
The BYU Singers are brought to Moapa Valley by the Moapa Valley Arts Council. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Robin Maughan at 398-3665 or stop by Decor & More in Overton.
