Kids Playing Chicken In The Road
To the Editor:
I am appalled at what I witnessed on my way home on Monday afternoon. While sitting at a stop sign at the backside of the fairgrounds, my family and I watch as a lifted truck passed doing at least 50-60 mph in a 25 mph zone. We headed down the street in the same direction as the truck was headed. It was out of our sight quick and as we got about a half a mile down the road I see three small kids playing at the edge of the road.

As we got closer to them the two older kids still only maybe 5-6 yrs old stepped off the street and away a bit, the youngest, maybe 3yrs old, stepped onto the street to play chicken with my car. No I’m not joking! He was standing in the road with his arms sticking straight out shaking his butt from side to side.

I started honking the horn and finally he moved. I also noticed there was a fully fenced yard with a play area for the kids. Yet they were out playing on the street. I also noticed there were no adults watching these kids play in the street.

I am mortified knowing as a parent of a 4 and 2 yr old, to know that here are these small children playing in the street where I just witnessed a truck speeding down the road. I only hope that the parents of these kids realize that their small children are playing chicken in the road, before someone gets hurt.
