The 6th annual Moapa Valley Relay for Life was held at the Moapa Valley High School track on Friday night through Saturday morning. This years local Relay event has collected over $20,000 so far. All proceeds are to be donated to the American Cancer Society to help fund research to find a cure for cancer. According to committee members donations are still coming in after the event and are still being accepted.

up camp. The Survivor dinner was put on by Karen Alsum Insurance. Alsum’s team, the “Allnighter Fighters” did a great job decorating the Survivor tent to go along with the Wizard of Oz theme of the evening which was “There’s No Place Like Hope”. Survivors and their families were able to enjoy a fantastic meal prepared by Keith and Mary Brose and Larry Alsum.

Haygen Wright walks the track in his hamburger hat during the 2008 Relay for Life on Friday, April 25. In the opening ceremony, Jana Ward, Laura Terry and Laila Kacher presented event coordinator Sue McMahill with a check for $1000 from a fundraising yard sale they had held the previous week.

Commissioner Tom Collins also presented a $5300 check from the ‘Roping for Life’ fundraiser that was held last week.

The MVHS Drum Corps led the Survivors in the opening lap and the long night of walking began.

The Male Beauty Pageant ( known as ‘Cinderfella’) was a different than in previous years. This year three participants took the stage. MVHS Seniors Nick DeLaFrance and Brady Leavitt and Freshman Brandon Reeves.

Each boy had a make up artist. Kylea McMurray worked her magic on Leavitt, Michaela Coburn did what she could with DeLaFrance, and L’yrsa McMurray and Noelle Rust both had to work on Reeves.

After make-up was applied and pretty outfits thrown on, the boys answered questions and strutted their stuff. In the end Reeves, looking ‘boyutiful’ took the honor of the 2008 Male Beauty Queen.

Look! It’s the Lollypop Guild! These young ladies were part of Camp Whipple during the 2008 Relay for Life event held on Friday, April 25, 2008. Yes, they walked the track selling lollypops to raise money for Cancer. Nice job girls! Relay participants spent the night walking the track. Teams were set up on the field providing snacks, drinks and food for sale with neatly decorated campsites.

A camp decorating contest was held and winners were announced. Third place went to Team Robison; second place to Team Whipple, and first place went to Team Allen & Simmonds.

In the morning the Moapa Valley Rotary Club arrived and cooked up a great breakfast which was enjoyed by many as they woke to a bright sun.
