At five foot four inches tall, one would hardly expect Blythe Thompson, a graduating senior at Moapa Valley High School, to play basketball. The amazing thing is not only does she play she is actually quite good, enough in fact to warrant an offer to play in college.

Blythe has been offered and accepted a full ride scholarship from Treasure Valley, a junior college in Ontario, Oregon to play basketball for the school. When asked, why Ontario, Oregon she
simply stated that she wanted to play ball and would go wherever a scholarship was offered.

Blythe comes from a very athletic family and said that her father has always pushed her to do her best. Perhaps that’s why she is ranked in the top three women’s 100 and 300M hurdles in the State of Nevada’s 3-A division.

Blythe said she plans to major in Sports medicine therapy and nutrition. She also said she would like to thank her parents and Coach, Shane Greenland, for helping her to achieve her goal of putting her self through college by playing basketball.

Blythe is the daughter of Brent and Erin Thompson of Logandale.

Cameron Kerwin, a senior at Moapa Valley High School, will soon be trading in his tennis shoes for army boots. Cameron has joined the Army Reserve and will begin training at Fort Leonard in Missouri on July 28; just about six weeks after graduating from high school.

When asked why he joined the military Cameron didn’t even hesitate. He said, “It will pay for college, help me to develop self discipline and good work ethic and it pays pretty good too.”

Cameron went on to say that he has thought about the military for quite some time, but it wasn’t until his good friend Andrew Sprague joined last year that he actually began to take the idea more seriously.

Cameron also said that he will be part of the same unit as Andrew who has now been a member of the reserves for almost a year. Both Cameron and Andrew will be serving as military police. Their unit is already on “Alert” which means they will leave for Iraq within the year.

After asking how his parents felt about him joining the reserves Cameron said that they are OK with the idea. He said his Mom was a little apprehensive in the beginning but is now fine. He went on to say he would like to thank his parents, grandparents and friends at school for helping him to be successful. He said that he also wanted to thank Kim Delgadillo and Kim Hardy for being such good teachers.

Cameron is the son of Roger and Meg Curtis of Logandale and Arthur Kirwin of Missouri.
