Moapa Valley Progress
Submitted May 7, 2008
With the Southern 3A Track Meet coming up this Friday and Saturday at Moapa Valley High School, the MVHS Boys and Girls Track Teams have been preparing for the chance to bring a Division and possibly a State Title back to the Pirate Faithful on their home turf. In order to continue to prepare for this task, Moapa Valley participated in the Meadows Invitational last weekend to get a final tuneup for this monumental event.
On the Men’s side, Moapa Valley did fairly well, placing third with a score of 88.5 points. Boulder City and Pahrump Valley were the two teams which placed ahead of Moapa Valley, taking 1st and 2nd respectively in the tournament.
The Pirates got some notably high finishes from several veteran athletes. Conley Masters took a first place finish in the 110 Meter Hurdles back to Moapa Valley to help his team score with a time of 16.09 seconds. In the 300 Meter Hurdles, Matt Delgadillo placed second to also score some team points with a time of 42.46 seconds.
The Pirates placed particularly high in the relay events which will be key if the Pirates plan on winning the upcoming Division Championship. Moapa Valley won both the 1600 and 3200 Meter Relays with times of 3:38 and 8:41.
To help with the team total, Jax Howard was able to pick up a victory in the Discus event to give Moapa Valley their overall point total in the Boys side.
The Lady Pirates also placed high, taking third as well with a score of 92.5 points. Faith Lutheran and Pahrump Valley finished first and second with Pahrump Valley being led by the phenomenal McKenzie Dean.
The Lady Pirates though had a few great finishes from some of their own “phenomenal” athletes. Leading that list was Blythe Thompson who won the High Jump, took second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:35, and also took second in the 1600 meter run with a time clocking in at 5:54.
Moapa Valley also got a very impressive performance from Lysha Marshall who placed in the 3200 Meter Run with a first place time of 13:51.
The Lady Pirates were also able to win the 1600 and 3200 Meter Relays with times of 4:28 and 10:54 meaning Moapa Valley swept these events and won them both.
Looking to the Southern 3A Track Meet this weekend at Moapa Valley’s Pirate Stadium, Moapa Valley has a chance to not only send several runners, jumpers, and throwers to State but also has a chance at something much sweeter; a Division Championship. When the first gun goes off, Moapa Valley will be one of the favorites to win the Boys Title along with Boulder City and Pahrump Valley. On the girls side, while it will take a great performance out of the Lady Pirates to show us the Title, no goal is too high for these young ladies.
