Moapa Valley High School hosted the Southern 3A Boys and Girls Divisional Track Meet last weekend with the hopes of the home crowd pulling the Pirates to victories in both the men’s and women’s contests.

After a few tumultuous years with the program, calm has finally found the waters of Pirate Track. The two people who have been an integral part of that is first-year Head Coaches Shane Hickman and Brandon Jones.

Both Pirate alumni, Hickman and Jones have brought back a spirit of accomplishment to Moapa Valley. Their efforts were rewarded over the weekend as Coach Hickman was named the Southern 3A Men’s Coach of the Year. Jones narrowly missed out on the award for the Girls side.

On Friday the Moapa Valley 4x800 Meter Relay team consisting of Matt Delgadillo, Shiloh Sandoval, Houston Costa, and Josh Wittter won their event with a time of 8:25.83 to be crowned the Division champs. The Pirate cause was also strengthened when Jax Howard won the Boys Discus Throw, throwing for 138 feet, 11 inches.

The Pirates were also able to rally for some high finishes to get kids to the State Meet this week in Reno. That charge was led by freshmen Josh Thompson who will compete in the 3200 meter run next week and Chase Witter who will compete in the 1600 meter run. Moapa Valley finished Friday with another state qualifier in the Triple Jump as Dustin Maletich rallied for a third place finish.

Matt Delgadillo won the 300 Meter Hurdles and both the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams qualifying for State.

As a team, however, the home track advantage didn’t work for Moapa Valley as they finished fifth with 114.5 points overall.

At the Girl’s Divisional, the Lady Pirates also made the best of their available opportunities. Several athletes seized their moments. Jordan Chappell qualified for State as a medalist in the 800 and 1600 meter runs. Another athlete who seized her opportunity was Blythe Thompson
who was crowned the champion in the Southern 3A Girls 300 Meter Hurdles with a time of 48.78 seconds. Thompson also qualified in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles.

The Lady Pirate relay teams ran well in all of the relay events but were only able to qualify two of the teams because of mistakes made in the other two races.

Regardless, Moapa Valley made their presence known in the 4x800 Meter Relay as the team of Kim Rollins, Teisha Howard, Lysha Marshall, and Jordan Chappell ran their way to the victory with a time of 11:01.44 minutes. In the 4x400 Meter Relay, the Lady Pirates finished second with Rollins, Chappell, Blythe Thompson, and Ariel Perez all taking place. The Lady Pirates placed fourth overall with 94 points.

This week, all of the state qualifiers from Moapa Valley will travel to Reno to take place in the 2008 NIAA Nevada Class 3A State Track Meet at Damonte Ranch High School. The meet will take place on Friday and Saturday.
