The Moapa Mermaids Synchronized Swimming Team has been hard at work this summer learning all kinds of beautiful swimming techniques for competitions in Las Vegas. The team traveled to Las Vegas last Saturday to compete in their first meet of the season against all of the other pool teams in Las Vegas.

In synchronized swimming the swimmers themselves are divided into class levels based on their skill performance. The coaches help to divide the swimmers into classes appropriate for their knowledge of the sport.

“We put them in classes, but they also get to give input,” said Coach Kim Lyon. “Each girl can decide if they want to swim in a more challenging class or if they are satisfied where they are.”

Once in these classes they compete against other swimmers in their class at the meets. The Moapa Mermaids are the largest team in the Clark County Pool system this year, but they also set the standard for high performance.

Three Mermaid swimmers nearly swept the advanced, Class Five awards. Danielle Lyon took second, followed by Danielle Pray and Bryanna Sheldon. In Class Four, Alyssa Zerkle also turned in a great performance and took second place.

However it was in Classes Two and Three that the Mermaids really excelled. Daesha Stastney took first place in Three and Hannah Sheldon took first place in Class Two. “The judges were really impressed,” said Lyon. “Hannah even got a few perfect tens, she did really well.”

The beginning class one swimmer Kierra Zerkle also held her own taking second place. “I was so proud of all of them,” said Lyon. “I was so excited for them because they did amazing. Everyone was so impressed with our team, and everyone was complimentary about our girls.”

The team will continue to practice for individual meets, but they are also working on a team routine. At the end of the swim season they will compete against all of the other teams with their whole team.
