The annual Moapa Valley Community Yard Sale took place on Saturday, March 14 with 26 different yard sale locations on the map. In addition, numerous other yard sales took place throughout the community that day to add to the yard sale festivities.
Back in 2005, Virginia Powers, then a resident of Overton, had a great idea. She thought about bringing shoppers from the urban regions north and south into Moapa Valley for a swap meet of sorts. The 2005 Community Yard Sale was

small but successful with about seven locations on the map. It was held again in 2007 when local go-getter and Rotarian Chris Green took on the job of coordinating the event. The next two years saw the number of yard sales grow to 15.
This year the numbers went crazy and at deadline 26 yard sales had hit the final map.
Even after deadline Green received requests to be included on the map. "I even had a couple of people from St. George that wanted to come down and set up their sales here," said Green.
The final map presented a detailed view of the valley roads with stars marking each sale and a brief description of a few of the items to be displayed there.
This was no easy job. Green said that she spent hours gathering information and putting the map together. She is not only coordinating the sale but her family is on the map as well as the Rotary Club. Green was a busy woman on Saturday morning. "I have been taking calls from Vegas all day with people asking about the yard sale," she said.
Sales began bright and early at 7:00 a.m. giving shoppers an early start. Two locations in the Moapa/Warm Springs area were on the map including the new Moapa hot spot the Muddy River Bar and Grill. Its parking lot was used as a community swap meet area for the morning, giving Moapa residents a central location for their sales.
Plenty of families held sales as well as some non-profit organizations. Some family sales ended early due to the large number of shoppers cleaning out their inventory.
Other sales included the Equus Ranch who participated to benefit the Lost City Museum; The St. John's Catholic Church Youth Group held a sale as a church fundraiser; the Cactus Cruiser auto club were on the map again and the Rotary Family Charity Sale was held in the Lin's parking lot with loads of items for sale. Rotarians Steve Getz and Ken Robison spent the last four months collecting items donated from local families to sell at their location.
At the end of the day Green felt that the MV Community Yard Sale was a huge success. "I am a firm believer in momentum," said Green, "If and when all the people come from other cities to shop and if and when people who don't usually come to yard sales come out and shop; if and when we do it every year consistently our success will be almost guaranteed."
The Moapa Valley Community Yard Sale was sponsored by the Moapa Valley Rotary Club.
