Sergeant Says...

Sgt. Bret Empey

As a community, we have had to struggle through some tragic events of late. I should not be surprised or amazed by the outpouring of love and charity with which this community responds. It happens every time. But, I am still in awe at how people here come together to pull one another through such challenges. You do so each and every time. In large part, the different townships and its residents in this area demonstrate the very definition of the word “community.” We live in a beautiful place with caring people all around. Thank you for that.

Through the past several weeks, I have watched the officers with whom I work do some amazing things. I have been privileged to receive your kind compliments on their behalf. Thank you for that as well.

As I listened to the many gracious things said about these officers and their work, I realized I am guilty of taking them for granted. I know these officers' background and work with them almost everyday. Maybe this is why I tend to forget how good they really are at their jobs. They are very talented and come with a varied wealth of experience, skills, and knowledge not usually found in one team of officers. When I step back, I realize I've not worked with a more well-rounded and experienced group than these men who live and serve in our community. To mend my ways I'd like to brag on our officers a bit and give a brief history of their tenure.

Within our small unit we have the most tenured Rural Officer in the entire department. Everyone of the officers assigned here (especially me) have been the benefactors of his extensive experience in rural policing. He is the proverbial, “Been there–done that!” rural police officer.

He, along with the others assigned here, bring the following years of experience in various assignments:5 years of Gang Investigations, 2.5 years of Property Crimes Investigations, 2 years of Auto Theft Investigations, 5 years of Robbery Investigations, 15 years of Mounted Patrol (Horses), 5 years of Motors (Motorcycle officers assigned to do traffic related events), 3.5 years of Internal Affairs Investigations, 2 years of Community Oriented Policing, 6 years of Narcotics Investigations, 27 years of DARE, 4 years of Training Academy, 16 years of FTO (Field Training Officer), 8 years of SWAT, 9.5 years of LSP (Line Solution Policing), 1 year of General Assignment Detective, 2 years of Background Investigations, 3.5 years of Corrections, 20 Crime Scene Investigations, 21 Defensive Tactics Instructor.

This is a wealth of talent from just 11 people. Thought you'd like to know and besides, I needed to be reminded. Thanks for letting me brag on your officers.
