MVHS Basketball Takes 5th In Preseason Tourney

The Moapa Valley High School Boy's Basketball team, and a shipload of supporters, sailed into Cedar City, Utah last week to compete in the first annual Steve Hodson Cancer Basketball Classic at Canyon View High School. Despite several injuries and ill players, coach Dallas Larsen's squad represented themselves and their school well, finishing in fifth place with a tournament record of 2-1.

On Monday, Dec. 28, Moapa Valley lost a three point halftime lead and fell to Uintah (Utah) 66-56. Zach Geary had 20 points and Kevin Cardinal chipped in 11.

On Tuesday, Dec. 29 the Pirates fell behind a very aggressive Carbon (Utah) team by as many as 11 points. But coach Dallas' Cowboys turned up their defensive intensity to stage a comeback. They earned a hard-fought 63-58 overtime victory.

Moapa Valley was led by Hayden Cooper's 16 points, and Zach Geary and James Frehner each had 13. In this game, the Pirates made 15 of 18 free throws during the 4th Quarter and overtime.

On Wednesday, Dec 30, MVHS came ready to play from the get-go and easily defeated Grantsville (Utah) by the score of 58-38. The Pirates aggressive and stifling defense had several of the Grantsville players clearly frustrated, which led to technical fouls and early exits for some of the Utah school's players. Josh Thompson tallied 14 points in this chippy contest, while Cooper and Geary had nine each.

In their final week before league season play, the Pirates will play Mountain View, the Aussie Basketball Travelers, and Faith Lutheran in the upcoming week. The first two games are at home with the second of the two games being tomorrow, Jan. 7 with a 6:00 PM starting time. On Friday, Jan. 8 the team plays away at Faith Lutheran at 7:30 PM.
