Home-Schoolers To Hold Fundraiser

Published February 3, 2010

A group of home-schooled children from Moapa Valley are holding a Valentines Day fundraiser in preparation for a special educational field trip this spring.

The group of home-schooled kids all attend a weekly class together on the subject of truth, logic, the habits of a scientist and Newtonian Math. According to Overton resident and home-schooling mom, Chloie Leavitt, the class is a very rigorous course. As a reward for their hard work, the students are planning a field trip in April. The field trip will be an excursion to southern California where the kids will visit Griffith Park Observatory, Scripps Aquarium, the Getty and Huntington museums and, if time permits, a day at the beach.

So the group is working to raise funds for the trip. "As home-schoolers we don't receive public funds or funds from any other source," said Leavitt. "The parents get drained from having to pay for curriculum and other materials. So the kids will raise the funds themselves for this large expense."

The students plan to sell homemade candy, cookie bouquets, cinnamon rolls, bread and cookies for Valentine's Day. "The items will all be dressed up and ready to give as gifts," Leavitt said. "And delivery will be available for a small charge."

The students will be taking pre-orders for these items at Lin's Marketplace in Overton this week beginning today, and continuing on February 4 and 6 from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. each day.

Pick up dates for the items will be on February 12 and 13 with delivery on February 13.

For added convenience, orders can also be phoned in. To order by phone call 397-6377.
